The Marina di Castagneto Carducci’s hinteland is famous to be the homeland of the so-called Super Tuscan wines.

The term Super Tuscan was coined in the early 1980s to describe a red blend from Tuscany. What makes “super Tuscan” wine different from other Tuscan wines (like Chianti) is the use of wine grapes that are not indigenous to Italy.

“Super Tuscan” is a term used to describe red wines from Tuscany that may include non-indigenous grapes, particularly Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. The creation of super Tuscan wines resulted from the frustration winemakers had towards a slow bureaucracy in changing Italy’s wine law during the 1970s. Winemakers began mixing ‘unsanctioned’ wine varieties (like Merlot) into their blends to make high-quality wines. The legal system eventually yielded in 1992 with the creation of IGT, a new designation that gave winemakers the ability to be more creative.

Perched on a hill less than 10 km from the sea, Castagneto is developed around the imposing medieval castle (now a location for events and parties) located at the highest point of the town. The city originally called “Castagneto Marittimo” became, at the beginning of the 20th century, “Castagneto Carducci” in honor of the famous Italian poet, Giosuè Carducci, who spent part of his childhood here.

The house that hosted the young Giosuè Carducci is certainly worth seeing: it is located in the city center and is now the seat of the Casa Carducci Development Center, open for visits from Tuesday to Sunday in the summer. Here you can see the rooms where the poet lived and an archive of poems and documents related to him.

Walking through the city you certainly cannot fail to notice the imposing Palazzo Comunale, even more majestic thanks to its dominant position, at the beginning of Via Marconi, a long downhill road towards the coast. Today it houses the town hall and related offices. The Church of San Lorenzo (Propositura di San Lorenzo) is together with the Castle the oldest building in Castagneto Carducci, although it has undergone numerous restorations over the centuries. In the nearby Church of S.S. Crucifix is ​​preserved a wooden Crucifix of the fifteenth century, an object of worship and veneration. The village of Castagneto is ideal for spending a relaxing evening, perhaps after returning from a day at the beach, for an aperitif or dinner, accompanied by a light sea breeze. On hot summer days the city appears rather empty and silent, but starting from the late afternoon the village instead comes alive with tourists and vacationers and is certainly even more pleasant to visit.

Listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1987, you can admire the four monuments that form the center of the city’s religious life, called miracles (so named by Gabriele D’Annunzio in the expression “Meadow of Miracles”, contained in the novel Maybe yes maybe no, from 1910) for their beauty and originality: the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Campo Santo and the Bell Tower. From this derives the popular (and improper) name of Piazza dei Miracoli, which then spread after the war and still later in the era of mass tourism.
